Hi, I am Judith Lasker, and I’m a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, USA. My lifelong interest in sociology centers on the study of health and medical care. My latest project on global health volunteering brings my career interests full circle to my earliest research on the health care system of Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa.  My new book, Hoping to Help: The Promises and Pitfalls of Global Health Volunteering, results from several years of research, including interviews, surveys, and participant observation. I am encouraged and hopeful as I talk to many different groups about this topic, meeting people with a great variety of backgrounds who are passionate about improving health in a responsible, ethical, and effective way. The intention of my book is to forward the strides currently taking place towards bettering global health volunteering for participants and recipients and everyone in between.
